Maintaining the Total Alkalinity within the correct range is the key to water balancing. Low Total Alkalinity will cause hot tub water to become corrosive and potentially damaging to the equipment and acrylic surface, it will also cause the pH to fluctuate widely. If the Total Alkalinity is too high then the water will become scale forming and it will be very difficult to adjust the pH of the water.
You should always adjust your Total Alkalinity before you adjust the calcium hardness or pH.
surespa Alkalinity Increaser should be pre-dissolved in a small plastic container filled with some of the warm hot tub water. Add a measured amount of the product, according to the table below, and carefully add the resulting solution to the spa whilst the pumps are turned on to aid dispersion.
Maintain a Total Alkalinity level of 80 - 120ppm in your hot tub.
|Size of your hot tub||To raise the Total Alkalinity...|
|10 ppm||25 ppm|
|1000 litres / 220 gals||14g||45g|
|1500 litres / 330 gals||27g||68g|
Alkalinity is a measure of the buffering capacity of the bicarbonate ions and, to some extent, the carbonate and hydroxide ions of water. These three ions all react with hydrogen ions to reduce acidity and raise pH. Alkalinity is normally given in mg/l as calcium carbonate (CaCO3) for all three ions.
